An unusual gin from the Black Forest in Germany, Monkey 47 gets its name from
the whopping forty-seven botanicals used to make it (plus that it's bottled at a
healthy 47%). This plethora of ingredients has paid off: in 2011 Monkey
47 won the World Spirits Award Gold in the Gin category, as well as Gold for best in
class for the Gin Worldwide at the International Wine and Spirits
Taste-wise there's a lot going on: woody, vegetal smells under pine-fresh, grassy citrus notes and botanical sweetness, like a pine forest after the rain. It's predictably complex, this being a robust and powerful gin with plenty of spice, fruit, and herb flavors. It's very well structured, with a citrus-fresh start that segues into pine and wood notes for a drying finish that's wooded and heavy. This gin is like a delicious, complex symphony that you can't quickly unpack, but can enjoy trying, over and over.
