December's Applejack of My Eye Box offered three cocktails highlighting applejack: Russell Davis's wintry spin on a Jack Rose, Christy Pope's cozy Cinnamon Apple Toddy, and Watson Barry's Black Gold, a seasonal old fashioned with a twist. 'Twas lots of holiday cheer in a glass!
November's That's Amaro! Box offered cocktails highlighting amaro, featuring a tiki-like drink perfect for fall, a tall refreshing highball with a lovely complexity to it, and a deliciously bitter chocolate coffee drink to make you feel like hitting the slopes early!
The Austin Without Limits Box featured the Huarache Nights by Chris Bostick, The Beat Goes On by Jessica Sanders, and the Ma Sour by Caer Ferguson, all of which could be made with bourbon or aged tequila!
What makes gin, gin? The one real requisite is the distilling of a neutral grain alcohol with juniper, and that’s actually pretty much it. What distinguishes the various gins from one another, on the other hand, is a far more interesting question! With so many distinct flavors, no two gins are truly alike (luckily we have a lifetime to try them all out!), which makes for an amazing range of what we can do with this beautiful spirit—and this box was a great opportunity to experiment!
Hot summer nights call for the spirit of the Incan gods: pisco, one of the purest spirits known to man. The only thing that enters the bottle is the grapes—and nothing else can be added, not even water. The result is the remarkably delicious and shockingly versatile unaged Peruvian brandy—the next big thing in the cocktail world!
Sake (the Japanese fermented rice liquor) is quickly becoming popular among bartenders due to its intense umami-ness (the fifth taste), complex flavor profile, and increasing availability and variety here in the US, though many people still haven’t discovered sake libations. So we thought we'd help—with this Sake It To Me Box!
The town of Tequila, Mexico—where the spirit we so love gets its name—is surrounded by a red volcanic soil, in which blue agave grows in abundance. After it's harvested, the blue agave's juice is extracted, fermented, and distilled, at which point it becomes tequila blanco. This spirit—along with the flavors of central Mexico—were our focus in May's Agave Blanco Box.
To celebrate the anniversary of Russell Davis joining Shaker & Spoon as our CCO (Chief Cocktail Officer), we re-released the first box we had created with his team: Vodka, Adventures, and Spring, Oh My! Using vodka as a blank canvas, three cocktail works of art made our taste buds rejoice by bringing spring flavors back to the fore.
Just in time for St. Paddy's Day, this box thoroughly explored Irish whiskey with drinks that ran the gamut from light and refreshing to heavier and smokier. Newcomers to Ireland’s “water of life” and connoisseurs were both likely to have their expectations upended by these recipes. Sláinte agus táinte!
Since the afterparty is often so much cooler than the actual event, we figured out a way to put all that leftover New Year's bubbly to good use and make the second month of the year more spectacular than the first with February’s Afterparty Box!
Much like brandy itself (which was a totally accidental discovery), our Brandy, She's So Fine Box offered some lovely surprises that even brandy connoisseurs may not have been expecting!
