In the past we’d jammed in Jamaica, careened elsewhere through the Caribbean, and vroomed through Venezuela, noticing at every turn the different ways these countries and cultures approach their rums—an endless variety of styles to which our intrepid bartenders deftly tailored their recipes. Then this year, the holidays were more adventurous than ever when Rums of Origins 3 came to town. It was a delicious December to remember!

A competition that shook up the industry like no other, Speed Rack began when Lynnette Marrero and Ivy Mix devised a tournament that was part performance by the world’s leading female bartenders and part fund-raiser to support several breast cancer organizations. Savory, sweet, and sometimes with touches of heat, the drinks in our Daijoubu Box showcased delicate and earthy Japanese shochu (or gin, as a fine alternative) and borrowed from the culinary and cultural traditions of Asia as seen through the lens of seasoned and creative Asian American bartenders.
