Recommended liquor: So that you can start mixing your cocktails as soon as your box arrives, why not go get your bottle of rye now? Each of this month's featured bartenders has a recommendation for you! Any of them will work well for all three recipes found in this box, depending on your preference.
“I really love Wild Turkey 101 Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey. It's a really good example of Kentucky rye whiskey as a category. It's a whiskey I always like to keep in my home bar,” says Mony Bunni. This rye is affordable, well made, and great for sipping and, with its 101 proof, is a great backbone for cocktails. And if the Wild Turkey 101 rye proves difficult to find, Mony’s got you covered: “The 81 proof Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is chock-full of lemon zest, honey, and oak flavors—the perfect combination for any well-made cocktail.”
Ryan Maybee says that “there are many, many fine ryes to sample, but I’d be remiss not to share the news that Rieger's Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey will be available on the market soon! But until then, I always default to the classic Rittenhouse Rye Bottled in Bond.” It’s a classic rye whiskey, and at 100 proof is bold enough to stand up to anything you mix it with. The combination of sweet and spicy flavors mingles nicely in many cocktails!
“The spice, lemon pepper, and hint of sweetness of Old Overholt Bonded Straight Rye Whiskey pairs really well with any thoughtfully crafted old fashioned,” raves Spencer Warren. “Though Old Overholt 40% Straight Rye Whiskey makes a fine alternative if you can’t find the bonded.” Old Overholt is a rye whiskey known for its accessibility and bold flavors. A perfect staple when you’re building a bar!
Recommended amount: To make all 12 drinks, you'll need 24 oz of rye; a medium (750 ml) bottle will be your best bet.
Recommended barware: A few different jiggers that measure 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 2 oz, as well as a strainer, shaker, fine mesh strainer, bar spoon, citrus juicer or reamer, and mixing glass. These are not all strictly necessary, but will improve your mixology experience.
Recommended glassware: A coupe glass, a rocks glass, and a double rocks glass.
Recommended ice: To make all 12 cocktails in one go, you'll need about 5 pounds of ice (5 ice trays’ worth).
