Recommended liquor: So that you can start mixing your cocktails as soon as your box arrives, why not go get your bottle of mezcal now? Each of this month's featured bartenders has a recommendation for you! Any of them will work well for all three recipes found in this box, depending on your preference:
Jules Mavromatis recommends Montelobos Espadín Mezcal, a beautifully balanced artisanal mezcal produced with five generations of love and passion behind it. You'll taste a lovely smoke that's not overbearing, with herbaceous and fruit layers.
Sam Jimenez would love for you to use Gracias a Dios Mezcal Espadín, from a small distillery that prides itself on its sustainable practices, planting three agaves for every bottle produced. Their master distiller is the fourth generation in his family to craft this amazing spirit and they do everything the artisanal way and in small batches. This mezcal has hints of spice, controlled smoke and oak, mint, and fruit. It’s balanced and fragrant, with nice earthy notes.
Caer Maiko Ferguson offers Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, which has been her well mezcal for ages and is hard to beat for its price and wide availability. With an espadín base, it's bold enough to hold up in a cocktail but not so aggressive that it won't play with other flavors. Nice and smoky, with tropical fruit, honey, and roast agave on the nose, and ginger, cinnamon, and tangerine on the palate. Plus, Del Maguey is an amazing company with sustainable and ethical practices, so Caer loves supporting them.
Recommended amount: To make all 12 drinks, you'll need 20 oz of mezcal; a medium (750 ml) bottle will be your best bet.
Recommended barware: A few different jiggers that measure 1/4, 1/2, 1, 1 1/2 and 2 oz, as well as a strainer, bar spoon, mixing glass, shaker, citrus juicer or reamer, muddler, and fine strainer. These are not all strictly necessary, but will improve your mixology experience.
Recommended glassware: A small collins glass; a rocks glass; and a double rocks glass.
Recommended ice: To make all 12 cocktails in one go, you'll need about 6 pounds of ice (6 ice trays’ worth).
