So that you can start mixing your cocktails as soon as your box arrives, why not go get
your bottle of dark rum now? Each of this month's featured bartenders has a recommendation
Any of them will work well for all three recipes found in this box,
depending on your preference:
Libby's recommendation is Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum, a small-batch blended rum produced by one of the oldest rum distilleries in the Caribbean. Richly warming notes of plump sultanas, cracked black pepper, and creamy vanilla on the nose and plenty of cinnamon with a hint of licorice and more vanilla on the palate. It's been aged in heavily charred bourbon oak barrels and has a bold, rich, and spicy flavor, with a long, balanced finish that drifts between sweet and spice, all of which'll pair well with these cocktails.
Frank recommends Zacapa 23 for its unique sweetness, which he says is great for making cocktails. Its vanilla, chocolate, and molasses notes provide a richness of flavor. According to Frank, "Zacapa is just the ideal rum!"
Joy recommends Don Q Gran Añejo—a top-of-the-range sipping rum from Puerto Rican domestic powerhouse Serralles (the Serralles family has been producing rum on the island since 1865)—for its wonderful flavor and complexity. This not-overly-sweet rum has slightly spicy aged oak and bourbon-like sweet/sour flavors, with a subtle creamy vanilla note that runs right through it. The finish is long and peppery but you never get any burn from this rum—it just perfectly complements your cocktails :)
We've partnered with our friends at Minibar Delivery to bring you a special offer this month! They've got all three of these recommendations: Mount Gay Black Barrel, Zacapa 23, and Don Q Gran Añejo, and code SHAKERSPOON will get you $10 off your first order on their site.
Recommended amount: To make all 12 drinks, you'll need 24 oz of dark rum; a medium (750 ml) bottle will be your best bet.
Recommended barware: A few different jiggers that measure 3/4, 1 and 2 oz, as well as a strainer, shaker, bar spoon, mixing glass, fine strainer, and citrus reamer or juicer. These are not all strictly necessary, but will improve your mixology experience.
Recommended glassware: Rocks glass, martini glass, and coupe
Recommended ice: To make all 12 cocktails in one go, you'll need about 4 pounds of ice (4 ice trays’ worth).
