Each of this month's featured bartenders has a recommendation for you! Any of them will work well for all three recipes found in this box, depending on your preference:
Julio Cabrera recommends Bacardi Reserva Ocho. Bacardi (like la trova) was born in Santiago de Cuba more than 100 years ago! This one's a really lovely premium rum that's easy to find and won't cost you a premium price.
Paul Yellin would love for you to use The Real McCoy 5 Year, a masterfully made and blended rum from the only true Barbadian-owned and -operated distillery left on the island.
Andres Chopite-Parra suggests Santa Teresa 1796 because of its dryness and complexity. You get the rich flavors of aged rum without being overwhelmed by sweetness. Plus, it's a Venezuelan rum!
Recommended amount: To make all 12 drinks, you'll need 22 oz of aged rum; a medium (750 ml) bottle will be your best bet.
Recommended barware: A few different jiggers that measure 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/2, and 2 oz, as well as a strainer, shaker, bar spoon, mixing glass, a fine grater (such as a Microplane), and citrus reamer or juicer. Additionally, if your fridge doesn't have a crushed ice option and you can't get pebble ice at the store, you'll need to make your own and can use either a Lewis bag and wooden mallet or a Ziploc freezer bag and another blunt kitchen object, such as a pestle. These are not all strictly necessary, but will improve your mixology experience.
Recommended glassware: Rocks glass, double rocks glass, and collins glass
Recommended ice: To make all 12 cocktails in one go, you'll need about 6 pounds of ice (6 ice trays’ worth).
